Should the TONI_KKAL Work Units be classified as a long unit? They only take my computers 5 to 6 hours to complete and you only get 13,924.90 credits with the 50% early finish bonus.

I think not. They are clearly short tasks, taking less than 3 hrs on some of my cards. Quality control must be on holiday :-)

My guess is that the project team would like to expedite this experiment and by classifying it as a "long" they are sending to people who typically have higher capability GPUs. This probably results in not only quicker returns on individual WUs runs but also is less likely to have delays caused by client errors and timeouts which require "resends".

The original post by GDF said the option for "ACEMD for long runs" was exactly that ... LONG WU runs. If this option is really about the version of the application and not the length of the WUs themselves then can this be made clear? Maybe call it something other than LONG? Maybe a post about why this version is better for the project other than the fact that they *might* be processing WUs that are 2x the size of the short WUs?

Of course they do, I dont think anyone is suggesting it should be any different.

I know the you and your team are very busy but I would like to ask you to have someone post a quick 1 minute update when *something* is changed or implemented. This would help keep us not only informed but also fully engaged.

Guys, this is what has kept us busy over the last month:

* we have been sorting out consequences of introducing the "long" queue; for one, the scheduler started behaving erratically especially for unreliable hosts, which were either receiving no tasks or long tasks...
* ...and that is why I tried to also puts some "not that long" long wus in the mix.
* we have new WU types around - these will have a section in the science page like the others
* then, as always, we have papers in progress

In general, the "long" queue is very important for us, and we are tweaking quite some handles for it to work.

Hi Toni,

Thank you for the update. I knew there must have been a reason you released the KKAL as *long*, I didn't know the *longs* had made the scheduling more difficult than it usually is. Nice to see you have been working creativly to help keep all of us crunchers busy :thumbsup:

I know the project team has been waiting a long time to get the *longs* in place and I'm glad to see it start to happen for you! Now that you have a mechanism in place for different length WUs maybe once NVIdia releases cards based on the 28 nm process we will have the chance to crunch some 20ns WUs for you :O

So just what ARE KKAL WU's, anyway? The GPUGrid pages http://www.gpugrid.net/science.php do NOT mention in any way such WU's

Announcements about ongoing/new work are normally made in the News thread.

Toni's KKAL work units study molecular interactions of a 'potentially' key signaling molecule thought to be involved in cancer. The molecule in question is an adapter, involved in binding several other molecules. Irregular signaling pertaining to the adapter is thought to result in cancer, so better understanding the molecule and its regulatory role could elucidate the molecules role, and in the long run might lead to treatment strategies.
The fact that the molecule has a loose structure makes it's function less understood, and it's less likely to be studied further using conventional laboratory methods - biochemical analysis, X-ray Crystallography, NMR...
