Several systems are again reporting GPU Downclocking.
So I'm opening this thread for specific and further discussion of the topic.
Ton's system for example (XP GTX480), is taking 40h to complete tasks that should complete in around 8h.
General tips for preventing such downclocking:
In NVidia control panel, change from "Adaptive" mode to Max Performance (may not be available on XP, but is on Vista, Win7 and Linux). Ubuntu 11.04 and 11.10 versions (and possibly others) does not save your performance selection, so you will need to reselect it each time you restart!
Restarting the system can help, but would only put off the next downclock.
Increasing the fan speed might help keep the card cooler and help prevent downclocking.
Reducing your GPU's frequency, often helps. Start with the GDDR (as this effects the task performance the least). If you need to also reduce the core frequency slightly.
It's also possible that the amps required to run some tasks is higher than for other tasks. A slight increase in amps might be sufficient to keep the GPU running in high performance.
Not sure it did anything but on a 2003server system (similar to XP) I opened NVidia Control Panel, selected Global Settings and selected Multiple display performance mode.

Hi,
I have another Gianni-task for this GTX 480 using windows-xp and gtx480 with nvidia-driver 290.36.
At this moment running more then 67 hrs and ready for almost 85%.
I become desperate about this>>
Stop running gpugrid????

took a very large amount of time. it restarted several times, and at least the last run (the one from which the time/step is computed) is actually reasonably fast 9ms/step. It should have taken 36000 seconds.

I did not find the performance mode in the the NVIDIA Control Pannel. One of my systems downclocked twice in the last two days. Drivers are 275.33 and the card is a GTX 570. When it happens, the card always goes to 405 MHz.
Any help is greatly appreciated. |

Prefer Maximum Performance is not available on XP!
It's only available on Linux, Vista, W7 and possibly Win 2008R2 server.

I am seeing downclocking only on GPUGrid tasks. I have two Seti tasks running at a time with no downclocking but as soon as I let a GPUGrid task on, it downclocks. I have restart the computer to reenable the full usage of the card.
Running Win7 x64, Galaxy GTX560Ti overvolted to 1.025 V to allow overclock to 918 MHz on the core. Running the 280.26 drivers. When it downclocks, it goes to 405 MHz on the core.
This was happening with other projects like Primegrid, Seti, and Collatz. I have recently allowed some Primegrid units and they have fixed the downclocking. The opti-aps on Seti fixed the downclocking there. (You may want to talk to Jason to see what he did to fix the downclocking for Seti.)

As I let my systems crunch 24/7 I used FermiBiosEditor to fix the downclocking of my 460's.
|

All appears to be well with the crunchers now. The Win 7 systems are set for Performance in the NVIDIA drivers and I have not seen them downclock in that configuration. The WinXP system does not appear to have the issue at all. Crunch on and thank you |

Good stuff in this post my 570 was downclocking constantly* so I followed skgivens advice and "NVidia control panel, change from "Adaptive" mode to Max Performance" i did it in vista. I left it on over night before posting and so far so good. My 460s on xp dont have the same problem, tho one is soon to be upgraded. |

This workunit http://www.gpugrid.net/workunit.php?wuid=3409883 downclocked multiple times. Has anyone else had issues with these units? The NVIDIA driver is set to performance. Nothing else changed on the system.
Ideas are welcome. |

FermiBiosEditor sounds a bit heavy handed, so I would suggest you try some of the following, and probably best in this order:
Increase the GPU fan speed, free up more CPU cores, reduce the GDDR5 freq., reduce the GPU freq., increase the Voltage (very slightly).

Big problem with this work unit. It immediately downclocks my GTX 580 to 405MHz.
