Message 47716 - Posted: 29 Jul 2017 | 17:32:52 UTC

I think this is post #3(?) on my problem (maybe if I ask the right question...)

Anyhow I'm running Fedora-25 on a AMD 1090T (6c) and a GTX770, Nvid x86_64-384.59. Before the "server switch" I was getting around 500,000 credits per day - then nothing.

So, questions:
How many people are running linux?
How many have stopped getting any tasks?
Those of you getting tasks, did you have to do anything? or did it just start running?
[question I haven't thought of....]

Thanks

I have Ubuntu 16.04 on my desktop computer. I'm also getting no new WUs.

I only get:

Mo 31 Jul 2017 15:43:24 CEST | GPUGRID | No tasks are available for Short runs (2-3 hours on fastest card)
Mo 31 Jul 2017 15:43:24 CEST | GPUGRID | No tasks are available for Long runs (8-12 hours on fastest card)
Mo 31 Jul 2017 15:43:24 CEST | GPUGRID | No tasks are available for Anaconda Python 3 Environment

I use Lubuntu 16.04 with a GTX 1070 on an AMD Ryzen 1700x, I do not have any problems! It downloads WUs after WUs and turns them back successfully.

Before that I had a GTX 970 on an AMD 6100 with Lubuntu as well. Worked very well.

There are driver problems for the GTX 770, but I don't really know the details. There was a long discussion on it, though I don't have the link now. I have several machines with Ubuntu 16.04 and Maxwell and Pascal cards that run with no problems. You could try an updated driver (it needs CUDA 8.0), but I don't think even that guarantees that it will work. It really takes a later GPU.

That just means no tasks available for your card, so it is apparently incompatible. I am getting plenty of work for my GTX 1070s.

I have so many problems with getting WUs on this project, I think I should spend my computing power on other projects.

Thanks, I've loaded the L&G NVIDIA 384, CUDA 8.0, wiped boinc from my system/(re)installed. ... got 0 tasks ...

What was that old sage saying...? Som'n bout IF IT AIN'T BROKE....
(but then I should talk????)

One of the reasons I run Linux is by my (feeble observations Nix runs aprox 4x faster than Doz) I'm told the IT(?) guy has gone fishing? swimming? boating? - ee's on holEday. So I give my GPU to Seti/Einstein/etc.

So... <sigh> ... [deep breath...] <SIGH>
----------------------
PS - to the ps3/gpu workforce - I know it's "your" project/baby but it you need/want some help please don't be too proud to say 'we've got other irons in the fire, anyone lend a hand fixing XYZ?'. I'm sure there are a few of us out here who could help - "signalling pathways in Cancer." nada-clue. Program code to store results in a DB? not even a lev-1 challenge. Help with webpage? lev-0.5. Please ask.

I think this explains the situation for the GTX 770.

It is unfortunate, but that is the price of progress. The life expectancy of a GPU for crunching these days is probably limited by software compatibility more than anything else. But just let the newer cards that are more power-efficient do the work for now, and save up for a Volta.

Ah, I don't have $500, $700 + for a new card just because someone doesn't think a 770 has the horsepower for their job. I was running right at 500K per day - that's not enough? OK, then how about ZERO!

I advise go crunch for other projects. Some have GPU works even for my 2009 notebook. :D

Blame Nvidia for dropping support of old architectures, don't blame this project for supporting the new cards by using CUDA 8.0. Nvidia uses very shady and greedy business practices and should be stopped.

It's not your GTX770, this card should be fine. There's a bug in the scheduler's logic, and it seems it does not send work for many Linux hosts. We could not figure the reason for this error yet.

Retvari:

You speak (type ;-/ ) as if you have some inside knowledge. Is there a flag? Anyway to say... "curl http... grid...?aflag=vvv" that will return a reason?

And I've said before - I/we are more than willing to lend some eyes. I found out a long time ago (when I was helping Ms. Ada) that you can write some code, has a bug, and you can read it 1000 time and never see the bug.

I had an experimental Linux host, which stopped receiving workunits without any apparent reason, just like other hosts did. I was experimenting with SWAN_SYNC at that time, and I thought that maybe I've messed up something with the OS or BOINC manager. I think that I've reinstalled the Linux, but it still could not get work after that.

Is there a flag?
That would be a simple explanation, but we haven't received any information related to this issue from the staff yet.

Anyway to say... "curl http... grid...?aflag=vvv" that will return a reason?
I think if there's a flag, you could not check it like this.

True, but it seems that Elvis has left the building.
