Evidently the Navy team has lost it's number one person, as far as number crunching goes. So we are ten places up from them. When I checked today we were at the number 52 Team slot for our numbers. Whereas the Navy is at our old slot at 62. It's just a friendly competition that I feel that is going on. Nothing official at all. Our number are looking up once again with only three of us actually active. I had another power supply outage in my wife's computer a week or so ago. Put in a supply with more wattage and with a much longer warranty. It's a EVGA 800 watt supply. More then adequate to do for her machine. It only really needs a 650 but in case I upgrade the Motherboard or video card it will take the upgrade with no problem.
Hope all is good with everyone and take care.... |

I agree with you 100 %. It's all good in the friendly competition. It's not like in the old days when people were jumping on board projects and teams. It seems to be just a matter of luck if we get anyone new these days.
Any ideas on how we could get more folks joining our team?
Sorry you had another Power Supply issue. at least that is an easy fix, especially if you were lucky enough to not blow the Main Board due to the issue. Good thing about quality power supplies its the protections seem to work better than on the cheap ones. I almost always use power supplies that are rated at least 30% over the wattage of the system I need to replace one in.

It's hard to get people to join. I think we are doing the best we can under the circumstances .
We are once again beating Navy by a long shot. I'm down to one computer again. Not the power supply this time just old age , like me. Just won't post at all. So it's probably a motherboard. The processor is an old i5 but it's 3rd- Generation and you can't get those anymore. So a New Motherboard is required and memory mas changed also so new memory is needed. So that's a Motherboard/Processor/Memory combo - for what I expect to be the minimum that's almost $500, a bit much now that the wife and I are both on Social Security. She lost almost $500 a month, ouch. So we wait until maybe one of my asbestos checks comes in. I have asbestosis , got it in my lungs back when I worked for Newport News Shipbuilding , way back in 1971 or so. I was a machinist but some nights we were loaned out to assembly. I had to drill Asbestos brake shoes on a capstan/anchor windlass drive for a commercial ship. Darn stuff was floating around my head like snow.Supervisors told us , "No problem , this stuff is safe" come to find out the supervisors knew in 1968 all about it and was hidden from us until 1976 or so. So much for safety !!! Anyway , that's why my numbers are down somewhat. |

As a builder I always hated when one of my reliable ones would go down. My current machine is starting to show a bit of age, I hope it can keep crunching at least 2 more years. This one as I said before someplace was a custom build but not by me. I just could not beat the price for the build so I had it made and shipped around 4 years ago. I did upgrade the NVIDIA card just last year to a 1080ti.. That sure helps my numbers a lot. Was way faster than my 960's in sli even.
When you go to do your new Mainboard look at a possible combo kit from Newegg. They do on occasion have some really good buys on the Main Board, Memory and CPU's.
I just recently upgraded my 256 gig Solid State Boot drive to a newer 1 terabyte one. My older drive was just starting to get tight on room. Still had about 85 gig free, but Windows is such a hog, especially after all the Patches and upgrades from 8 to 10 LOL.
Good luck, I know that being on SS is not easy. Glad you got the asbestosis ID'd and have something extra from it coming in to help you out. I lived & worked in many buildings in the USAF that had asbestos hanging out all over them not to mention my father was in the oil business for many years and as a young boy I used to go on calls all the times to help him out. I applied a lot of asbestos insulation and fireproofing around oil burners and flu-pipes. So far no asbestosis has been detected, but we all know that it can pop up at any time.

I agree on all of your points Jim. I checked on Navy again and those people have come way back again. They passed us like a fast Greyhound, not the bus (LOL). Their membership is up and ours is down. There is only 3 of us against many more of them. We tend to produce more per member but we just don't have the numbers. Just the way it is , these days.
I've been buying from NewEgg for a long time now. My problem is waiting till one of those checks comes in and they are far between now a days. Once a year , if I'm lucky.I can get a combo for less but it always seems like one part of the combo is not what I want, you know how it goes. I do have a NVIDIA GTX 1070 in place of the old 660 ( was in SLI with another 660 ) so by itself is faster then the two 660's but still not a 1080 . Just could not justify it a year or so ago , when I got it . That's in this unit my computer - not the wife's .
Thanks for the response and words of encouragement. You take care and I'll talk to you soon.

The Navy has more than double our 5 active users, so it's going to be hard to catch up, unless somehow we get some new members or get inactive members back into doing GPUGid. I have sent out an email to all members, but have only received a few replies. I would say that more than 75 percent of the emails were rejected for either being Inactive or Mailbox Full can't receive any more.
What would you think of maybe creating a Facebook Group for our team. We might get more new users as that has a lot more exposure than either my Web site or this Message Board?

Facebook is a more "now" time frame type of communicator and I think that could be good. But the other side is that things are slow on comms, with us. So we may also be disappointed. But then again it puts us out there and we can see it quickly. I say try it. We could throw around some things to seem more active then we really are. That's a good thing. I think that people are worried about virus issues and so forth. So much in the news and ads about it.
You're right about the Navy. Their lead guy is at 1 Million now and he's just coming off of no files to work on. He is normally around 1.6 million or more. I'm at 400k at best or so. Plus they just have more active people. Loosing that other computer has hurt my numbers by about 30-40% lower then they were. I was at 700k at my best. I'm going to try the old computer again this weekend and see if it's not memory causing the issue.
Things are slow around home right now, I've been sick since Tuesday of this week. Starting to look like the flu and for me, 7 heart attacks and Rheumatoid Arthritis that's really dangerous. So it's off to the Doctor or the ER today. I'll let you know what it is asap but if they stick me in the hospital then I'll be there for a few days. I'll try and let you know if I get admitted to the hospital. If they send me right over I won't have a chance to call though.
Take care Jim . |

Definitely get in to the doc and get it looked at. I'll be watching for ya Mike.
You know I wish you nothing but the best of luck. Mean time I'll kick around the FB Idea. As you say, comms are slow.
Be well.

Thanks for the Good Wishes Jim . Got to the Doctor, feeling a little better today for one thing. Gave me a script for antibiotic and I picked up some Mucinex and Tylenol, both helped some. The Doc ran the Flu test and was a negative , that's good. Since it is the weekend no answer on the X ray that the hospital did. Doctors office doesn't have a X ray machine. Checking for pneumonia, don't think I have that though, had it when I was around 38 years old or so, before my first heart attack. So hopefully it's just a really bad summer cold. Usually I'm not sick for more then 24 hours. So this is a bit heavy for me. The fever seems to have broken, a good sign. I see the Doc this coming Friday no matter what. With my heart issues she just wants to make sure what ever I have is over with.
I'll keep you updated on the sickness.
The FB thing, more I think about it the better I like it. Easy to do. We just have to remember that they decide what they want in a post, not us. But it has it's shiny stars and it's detractors. Best way to go, it's FREE !!! I've run websites since 1997 , on and off. But websites have to get a good link or really good advertising to get people to the site. Whereas FB already has all of that. Best way !! |

Keep on doing what you're doing, it seems to be working for you. Hoping you get over it quick.
I have started a FB Page. Let me know what you think so far. Would you like to be moderator on it or something? Let me know. Looking for ideas to incorporate into it. Like a post with links the Boinc Project Page and Software Downloads Page and all our teams etc...
www.facebook.com/USAFTeam/
Rest and get well above all. |

Jim , Looking good. It will change over time , as they all do. But almost 100% of the time for the better.
I would be proud to be a moderator on the FB site. Thank you for the offer.
I wanted to ask firstly , do we want a group where we join the page ( not like joining Boinc , a bit simpler ) ? It allows us to boot people if they become a problem and to keep a eye on who's coming and going. Good security idea to do so.
I'm no expert on Face Book but I've got, under my belt, almost 27 years of computer hardware/ software experience. It is from years ago as I've been disabled for 14 years and one year of actual retirement. So I do have a little bit of this type of understanding available under my scalp. Wish it was in my brain though, ha ha, bad humor this time of the AM. Anyway think about the group idea and I'll think about some things we could possibly add to the page.

Well, it's a Facebook Page and not a group at the moment, but I think it would be better as a group as we can allow people to join it and control things better. I will work on making that change to it over the next week and let ya know when I get it done :D
