Toni,

Expect an onslaught from new joiners transferring over from Seti@home.

I was struck by the news. Many historic achievements with that project - including BOINC itself. I hope their refocused efforts in backend analysis result in discoveries that earn them increased support and a restart of distributed crunching.

WOW! (LOL)

I started with SETI@home 20 years ago. Had an HP Omnibook 4150 laptop that I upgraded with a better processor. Used to leave it on my desk at work running overnight. One day I picked up my laptop and noticed a faint brown spot on the light colored desktop. I was cooking the top of my desk with the heat.

I remember staring at the screensaver for long periods of time wondering if I would see ET phone home. My opinion, I don't really believe ET is out there however the science is very interesting. I truly think there is a lot of value in scanning the skies for radio signals.

In the meantime I will contribute to Milkyway@Home and Einstein@home when GPUGRID doesn't have work.

If you missed it here is a link to the post https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=85267

It's a pity that such a seminal project ends.

Any newcomers will be welcomed by the 300k WUs :)

Be careful what you wish for! I'm having more-than-usual difficulty connecting to the server this morning - and SETI doesn't close until the end of the month. You may need to review your hardware capacity.

Yes I'm aware. The cause is not really clear, as it seems to be an all-or-nothing slowdown.

I was mainly getting failure to connect messages - affecting uploads, downloads, and this web site.

That's happening at the server/OS level, not in BOINC.

I'm being plagued with GPUGrid hanging the hosts with a stalled scheduler connection that never times out and prevents any other project scheduler connection from completing.

So tasks just pile up unreported and caches keep falling.

for me, the access to the Server Status Page has been almost impossible during the past days.
At first, it seems to take several minutes to build up the site, then it ends up in a timeout.
What's going wrong?

That used to be the symptoms for us in the U.S. But I have not seen it so much recently. It seems to migrate around the world.

I wonder if people still have "project update" or "request for new tasks" scripts still running? There's no need for them any more since there are plenty of tasks in the que. Depending on the interval between request for new work, they could be considered as a DoS attack on the server.

Corona? (just a joke)

It will take maybe 5 seconds to access the basic status page, and then another 5 seconds for the "New version of ACEMD" statistics.
I think it is a new mutation.

SETI may be dead but David Anderson's Science United is here. I think this is his vision of the future of BOINC. Look at the list of its computers and half don't even have a GPU and yet here they are requesting WUs from GG.

Plus, they can't log on to their account here to ask for advice, because they've not been told their own password. And the project can't send them an email, because the project doesn't know their email address.

I would think that Science United is complementary to BOINC, not a competitor. There is no point in duplicating BOINC. Whether there is an audience for the non-geek approach is another matter, but Dave Anderson should be congratulated for trying.

I am more concerned about the availability of work. I see "no tasks available" too often. If SU just adds more crunchers, it only gets worse.

But DA mentioned that he was trying to make BOINC easier to use for the researchers. That would be my top priority. There must be a lot of low-budget labs around the world that would love more computing power, if they could figure out how to get it.
